PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) -

The Paducah Police Department is reporting that a Mayfield man has been arrested and jailed on an assault charge on New Year’s Eve.

Police said they received a call on Dec. 22 from a woman who said her boyfriend, Randall L. Cope, 31, of Mayfield, Kentucky, assaulted her at a motel. She was admitted to a local hospital and was later transported to another hospital for treatment of serious injuries. She spent more than a week in the hospital.

Officers found Cope on New Year's Eve as he was driving on 28th Street. He was arrested on outstanding bench warrants charging him with contempt of court.

He was then brought to the police station and interviewed by Det. Jason Montgomery, in which he admitted to having to hit the woman.

Cope was charged with second-degree assault and booked into McCracken County Regional Jail.
