COMMERCE, MO (KFVS) -

A satellite map from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shows where a private levee south of Commerce breached on Jan. 2.

The Powers Island private levee south of the city of Commerce, Mo. along the west bank of the Upper Mississippi River breached early on Saturday.

This levee is primarily intended to protect agricultural lands and some improved properties.

The breach allowed about 5,500 acres of land to flood and lowered river stages at Cape Girardeau, Mo. It also reduced pressure on federal levees that are part of the Mississippi River and Tributaries Project.
