NEW YEAR FLOOD closes I-55 in St. Louis Co., Midwest communities evacuate

If you plan on going north today, you may have to make alternate plans.

The Missouri Department of Transportation reports Interstate 55 near the 193 mile marker is closed as crews battle rising waters near the Meramec River. Both northbound and southbound lanes are closed.

Here in the Heartland

The Missouri Highway Patrol responded to the scene of a partially submerged vehicle on Missouri Highway 74, just east of Dutchtown late on Wednesday night. Luckily, a woman and four children were able to get out safely and walk to a nearby home.

The Egyptian High School basketball team helped fill sandbags in Olive Branch on Wednesday. The team came up with the idea to help out instead of practice for the week.

Other rescues are ongoing throughout Missouri and Illinois as communities continue to evacuate. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced on Wednesday that nine levees had been topped by water and nearly a dozen others were considered at risk for "possible significant distress."

National news

An arrest warrant was issued for a 10th suspect in the Paris attacks. A Belgian man, born in 1993 and identified only as Ayoub B., was arrested and detained following a search in Brussels.

The mother of the "affluenza" teen has returned to the U.S. from Mexico, but without her son. Ethan Couch's deportation was delayed by a Mexican judge. Authorities believed Couch fled to Mexico with his mother in November as prosecutors investigated whether he had violated his probation.
