ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Four lanes of southbound Interstate 55 are open to traffic at the Meramec River, mile marker 193. Three lanes of northbound I-55 are open as of just before 8 a.m. on Friday.

Interstate 44 reopened Friday morning in St. Louis County between mile markers 253 and 274.

Route 231/Telegraph was the only crossing open between St. Louis and Jefferson Counties. According to MoDOT, another alternate route was Route 231 to U.S. 61/67 to Imperial Main Street.

On Wednesday and Thursday, crews were conducting a major sandbagging and pumping operation to divert the water away from the interstate, according MoDOT spokesperson Marie Elliott.

Both northbound and southbound lanes were closed to traffic while crews move equipment to battle the floodwaters.

The concern for traffic was that there was very few ways around the road closures.

According to MoDOT, with many other roads closed in the St. Louis area, the open roads are experiencing extreme congestion.

Interstate travelers can use Interstate 57 in Illinois to cross the Mississippi River at Sikeston, Mo., and reconnect to I-55.

Drivers needing to travel across Missouri are encouraged to use I-70 to I-49 in Kansas City to I-44 in Joplin or reverse depending on eastbound or westbound travel.
