East Prairie man charged with assault and disturbing the peace

EAST PRAIRIE, MO (KFVS) -

An East Prairie man was arrested on assault and peace disturbance charges Tuesday.

An investigation by the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Department was launched after a local business owner reported being assaulted by an angry customer.

The victim told deputies 20-year-old Austin S. Peters of East Prairie had come to the business to pick up multiple bad checks and then threatened to assault the owner when he learned of the associated fees.

Soon after that incident, deputies found Peters and took him to the Mississippi County Detention Center. Following the arrest, deputies found probable cause to believe that the suspect had cursed at and threatened to strike a cashier with a cash register.

Peters is charged with assault in the third degree and disturbing the peace. If convicted, he could spend up to a year and a half behind bars.
