Inspectors will be looking for damage Wednesday, Dec. 30 after a barge hit the Ledbetter Bridge overnight.

According to the US Coast Guard, the Motor Vessel Tennessee Hunter was pushing 15 empty hopper barges when the captain reported strong currents caused by floodwaters pushed the tow into the single in-water pier around 11:30 p.m.

The pilot reported no significant damage to the barges and nor any visible damage to the pier.

The Kentucky Transportation District reports a barge inspector was dispatched to the bridge around midnight to check for damage and the ensure the safety of the bridge.

After restricting traffic on the bridge for about 45 minutes, the inspect gave the all clear.

However, an inspector will return to the bridge on Wednesday to check the pier in the daylight.

The crash marks the first time a tow boat hit the in-water pier on the New Ledbetter Bridge, which opened to vehicle traffic at the end of July in 2013.
