Murphysboro, IL volunteers serve and deliver food to displaced families

A group of volunteers from St. Andrews Catholic Church in Murphysboro, Illinois came in Tuesday and went straight to work at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Church members and other volunteers made chicken and dumplings for displaced families and also volunteers who are helping with flood preparations.

Volunteers served and delivered meals in Grand Tower, Illinois and Raddle, Illinois.

Sharee Langenstein thought of the idea and says when it comes to the southern Illinois community it's all about family helping family.

"The values of the people here are wonderful and we all look out for eachother," Langenstein said. "I know that at some point in time people will continue to pay this forward. Whenever we have a crisis we all come together and look out for each other."

Roughly 400 people were served.

Langenstein says she's been moved to tears by the amount of people that came in to help and donate food.

"I'm so grateful for the people here. I don't even have the words how wonderful this experience has been," she said. "Everybody wants to helps, they want to do whatever they can to help their southern Illinois family."

Members of St. Andrews church will be making more chicken and dumplings Wednesday morning.

Langenstein said this event wouldn't be possible with the help of St. Ann Church in Raddle, Illinois, church and volunteer groups helping deliver food, Pat's BBQ, 17th St. Barbecue, One Hot Cookie, Kroger, Walmart and others.

If you're interested in helping, you can contact the Murphysboro Knights of Columbus hall at 618-687-3258.
