GRAND TOWER, IL (KFVS) -

Volunteers in Grand Tower worked to prepare for the coming flood, Monday.

Dozens of people filled hundreds of sandbags in preparation for potentially historic water levels that are expected to crest as early as this weekend.

"It's a cold windy day and I see a lot of people here I don't even know,” Mayor Mike Ellet said. “My heart goes out to them."

They hauled in gravel by the truck full to raise the levee that protects the town from the Mississippi’s waters.

"We've had a lot more help here a lot quicker and I think we're in pretty good shape," Grand Tower resident Bob Henson said.

Henson was around for the last big flood in 1993 and knows what could be in store.

"Out on the Big Muddy Levee the slides and things like that it just needs some man power to fix it," Henson said.

Crews did just that. They used tarps and sandbags to reinforce weak spots on the Big Muddy Levee just south of Grand Tower.

"It's the only thing we can do to keep it from eroding further," Grand Tower fire fighter Phillip Glodo said.

So far, the levee is holding. Should anything happen, folks in Grand Tower say they feel ready.

"We need a break here or there but we feel like we're in good shape,"
Henson said.
