CHESTER, IL (KFVS) -

According to US Coast Guard Petty Officer Persoon in St. Louis, a barge somehow detached from its fleet overnight and began drifting down the Mississippi River.

Persoon said he is unsure at this time if the Chester bridge was hit by the barge. He did say the barge was found up against the Chester bridge and was first noticed by a passerby. The person then called and reported it to the Chester Police Department.

As of 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, the barge is still in the process of being recovered by a Southern Illinois transport company.

The barge was attached to a fleet upstream, but Persoon said he is unsure how it became detached.

He said Missouri state officials have checked into the incident and found there was no damage to the bridge.
