Murphysboro native spends Christmas time giving back

One special volunteer has been helping out with the Murphysboro Christmas dinner for quite some time.

Marian Wright-Cavitt has been volunteering her Christmases for more than 20 years.

“I come back just for fun," Wright-Cavitt said. “I just love giving.”

It’s something she’s been doing for years.

“You meet a lot of different people, especially the volunteers," Wright-Cavitt said. "And everybody is so happy, we just have a great time during Christmas.”

Volunteering is a passion she and her husband shared.

“My husband and I we would do a lot of things in the community," she said. "He was quite a community worker, his name was Robert Cavitt. He passed away in 2012. And we were moving, and we moved to Galesburg, but he didn’t make it to get to Galesburg."

Now living more than four hours away, she continues that tradition and still makes it back to give back.

“People don’t realize how much you touch people by helping them," she said. "And it’s not that you’re feeling sorry for anybody and it makes you feel good and them feel good, really!”

The Murphysboro Christmas Community dinner will be held tomorrow afternoon from noon to 2 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Murphysboro, Illinois.
