Summersville tornado siren failed to function during severe weather

MOUNT VERNON, IL (KFVS) -

Mount Vernon residents likely heard tornado sirens go off on Thursday, Dec. 24, even though there was not a threat of severe weather.

On Wednesday when a strong line of storms moved through the Heartland, causing tornado watches to be issued in some areas, it was determined the Summersville warning siren in Mt. Vernon was not functioning properly.

According to the Mt. Vernon Police Department, the status of the warning siren was determined when the storms hit.

The City of Mt. Vernon worked to fix the siren on Thursday morning

In order to make the repairs, the city activated all of the sirens in Mt. Vernon since they do not operate independently.

Crews activated the storm siren system for maintenance and testing.

Police say residents cam disregard the notifications.
