Strong storms down power lines, trees across Heartland

A fast moving storm crossed through parts of southeast Missouri on Wednesday, Dec. 23.

Straight line winds were reported, in addition to heavy rain.

Storm damage

According to the National Weather Service:

  • 11:39 a.m. - Large tree down in Sesser, Ill. Metal framed barn collapsed.
  • 11:45 a.m. - Power pole snapped at ground level on New Street in Pinckneyville, Ill. Portion of Highway 154 closed due to downed trees.

Wind knocked down power lines along portions of Hwy. 21 near Ellsinore in Carter County, Missouri. According to the National Weather Service, the highway is closing.

According to the Carter County Sheriff's Department, there is debris across roadway from Chilton to Hwy. H in Carter County, which is consistent with straight line winds.

In Carter County, County Roads 327 and 209A are closed due to downed power lines.

The Carter County sheriff says there have been no reports of injuries.

In Ripley County, Missouri, the sheriff reports power lines are down along Hwy.Y north of Doniphan because of strong winds.

According to the Puxico Fire Chief, a downed tree collapsed on a home on Hwy. T, and north of Hwy. J.

Residents in Wayne, Bollinger and Madison counties reported power outages. 

In Franklin County, Ill. large tree limbs were reported down across the community.

Power outages in Missouri and Illinois

At around 12:10 p.m., Ameren Missouri reports 174 customers without power in Cape Girardeau County. They also report 13 customers without power in Iron County, 50 customers without power in St. Francois County and 14 customers without power in Washington County.

At around 12:10 p.m., Ameren Illinois reports 208 customers in Franklin County without power. There is also 1 customer without power in Jackson County, 352 customers without power in Jefferson County, 865 customers in Perry County, 156 customers in Randolph County and 1,449 customers in Saline County.

Closures

The Wappapello Festival of Lights is closed on Wednesday night due to weather.
