Mailing Christmas gifts in time for the holiday

The last Christmas rush is on, and it's not just choosing the right gift, it's getting it there on time.

With Christmas in just a few days, people are trying to get those gifts sent to the right places before the holiday gets here.

The Marion, Illinois UPS store was pretty packed and people were ready to get their gifts shipped.

“We have family in Florida so all of this is getting sent down there so I have to do next day air to make sure the kids will have it for Christmas day," Carterville resident, Tammy Harshbarger said.

Christmas time is coming soon and people want to make sure their gifts make it in time for the holiday.

“Well this is old habit for me because it’s always crunch time and they’ve got to go or else it’s going to get stale," Judy Tatum said.

The Marion UPS store was filled with people today and the owner, Jim Skiersch, said within the past week or so, 400 to 500 boxes have been wrapped and packed up each day.

“Times are premium right now with us and everybody else trying to get ready for Christmas," he said.

Putting gifts in the right wrapping and making sure it’s handled with care is a necessity.

After those packages are wrapped, they go to the distribution office for them to get shipped to families and friends.

"UPS comes here and then they take it and it goes into their system," Skiersch said.

At the store, Skiersch said although there isn’t a specific routine for the holiday season, sometimes there are longer hours to make sure gifts are sent in time for the holiday.

“If that means we have to stay in a little later or come in a little earlier or whatever we have to do it has to be done," he said. "And we generally manage to get it all done.”

And for Tammy Harshbarger, it’s about making sure a little piece is of her is with her family on Christmas morning.

“Because I can’t be with them physically, and so I’d like for them to know that I’m thinking about them," she said.

Skiersch said as it gets closer to Christmas, the cost of sending those gifts on time can really add up, for premium service and/or expedited shipping.

His biggest advice is to send them earlier to avoid any delays.
