Tis the season for home break-ins, and chances are you're gonna leave home, hit the road and visit the family.

While you're planning your Christmas getaway this year, it is important to know the ways to protect your home.

While all through the house before you head out, Darin Hickey of the Cape Girardeau Police Departments said in this case, hide the evidence no one is home.

"You may want to have a friend come pick up your newspaper for you or at least throw it up on the porch so someone driving by doesn't see the stack of newspapers in your driveway and know that you are not home,” Hickey said.

This goes for your trash, too.

Hickey said do not pile up empty gift boxes from your new computer, DVD player or stereo out on the street.

"Be cognitive of what you do with your trash, what is that trash, where do you take it," he said. "A lot of places and a lot of businesses will let you use their dumpsters if you call ahead and let them know."

Illuminate your property to deter robbers from picking your house to rob.

"Motion sensor lights are fantastic," Hickey said. "The more you can have the better because criminals don't want to be seen. If they get lit up there is a good chance they may run off."

Homes without security systems are up to 300 percent more likely to be broken into. So, if it's an option have them installed.

And for those who love to post - this is not the time to brag about the weather where you are.

Keep your travel plans offline.

"Don't tell someone that you are not home, you wouldn't tell a stranger that you are not going to be home for the next week, don't put it on social media,” Hickey said.

If installing a security system is not for you, you can always contact your local police department to have your home or property monitored by patrols while you are away.
