Cape Girardeau police buy bicycle for man after assault, robbery

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A Cape Girardeau man was assaulted and robbed over the weekend, but the victim’s stolen property was shortly returned thanks to local police officers and an area business.

A 61-year-old male (Whom was referred to by Cape Girardeau officers as “Joe”) was assaulted in Cape Girardeau on Saturday according to police.

An undisclosed amount of cash, and the bicycle Joe was riding at the time of the incident was stolen.

At the time Officer Ryan Droege and colleagues interviewed the victim, they learned the bicycle was the victim’s sole mode of transportation.

“I can’t believe this happened to him.” Droege said. “[Joe] said he had two jobs to get to, and I was like there has to be something we can do for him. We can find him a bike somewhere, and somehow we can pull something together.”

Droege and a few others from Cape Girardeau Police Department’s “C Platoon” decided to pool money and purchase a new bicycle for the victim.

“When the employees at WalMart learned what we were doing, they helped us pick out a bike and gave it to us for free.” Droege said.

Droege says the original bicycle was found abandoned in front of the emergency room at Southeast Hospital on Sunday.

“It wasn’t locked up, there hadn’t been any patients who had come in from it.” Droege said.

Droege says the bike was processed for fingerprints and DNA and subsequently returned to the victim.
