CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The ice rink set up in Carbondale's Town Square is now open.

The rink is made of plastic sections coated in silicone, and can only be used with specific types of ice skate, which can be rented for $3 on site.

“I’m envious of this weather around Christmas time, I’m from northern Indiana.” William Wilson said on Saturday. “Without the real ice, you’re able to come out and kind of take part in an activity that’s very much part of the season.”

“That’s the problem in southern Illinois if you’re looking for an ice rink. The weather.” Carbondale Mayor Mike Henry said. “We looked as far as St. Louis for one of these, but Walkers Bluff stepped up and helped us out.”

The Carterville winery donated the silicone rink to the city for the duration of the season.

All proceeds will go to construct the Carbondale Super Splash Park.
