Wickliffe, KY restaurant owners plan free meal for community

It’s been more than four months since Wickliffe's Paper mill closed its doors.

As the town's biggest employer, surrounding businesses were hit hard, but that hasn't stopped some from giving back.

The Wagon Wheel is one of Wickliffe, Kentucky's last remaining restaurants.

The owners said they've felt the effects from the paper mill closure but that's not stopping them from making sure everyone gets to celebrate the holiday.

"A lot of people have given all year long, patronizing this place. The least we could do is give a little bit back,” said Danny Brewer.

Back in August, The Verso Corporation announced plans to idle production indefinitely at its paper mill. Four months later, the mill is still closed; and the hope that it will reopen is fading.

"People are pulling together a little bit where they can,” said Brewer.

Folks not only in Wickliffe, but Ballard County, are feeling the effects after more than 300 employees lost their jobs.

Giving the pair more of a reason to give back.

"We've gone down a little bit but other than that the community still supports us very much and for the people of Ballard County, that is why we want to do this dinner because there are people out there that can't afford dinner or can't get out to have it so we are doing it to help all of Ballard County,” said Sandra Vanburen.

Over the weekend, the two and the rest of the restaurant's staff are preparing a holiday feast for anyone in Ballard County with an appetite.

"When times get down a little bit, that’s when people pull together,” he said.

The free dinner is on Monday, December 21 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

There will be also be live music.
