Zeigler PD raises $1,200 for first-ever Shop with a Cop event

ZEIGLER, IL (KFVS) -

Police cars lined the parking lot of the Walmart in Benton, Illinois on Thursday afternoon, December 17, but they weren't making any arrests.

More than $1,200 was donated to the police department in Zeigler in less than two days; all to help them give back to the community for the holidays.

"They see the bad side, with their dad getting arrested, but it's nice to have this program because they get to see that cops aren't all about just taking their dad," Andrea Swain said.

Swain is a single mother of three and works two jobs in Zeigler.

On Thursday, Swain and several other parents had police escorts through the toy aisles.

"Some of the families around town, this is a little tougher time of year for them," said Chief Ben Burkhamer. "We've got some hard-working people who really want to provide for their family, but at this time of year they need just that little bit of extra help."

A small fundraiser and three area businesses donated cash to create Zeigler's first-ever Shop with a Cop program, which this year granted a few Christmas wishes for eight area kids.

"He's probably in heaven right now," Swain said. "My son. He wants to be a cop. A cop or a doctor. Either way is fine with me."

"This is kind of a fun part of the job. The calls that we go out on, usually, are rarely 'fun.' So, this is a chance for us to get out and still serve the community," Chief Burkhamer said.

Each of the eight selected by the police department received $150 in Christmas gifts.

Chief Burkhamer said he hopes to bring the program back next year and reach even more families.
