Cape Jaycees deliver toy donations

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

For the 41st year, the Cape Jaycees are helping Santa out.

On Thursday night, dozens of volunteers suited up and packed up to deliver toys to kids in the area.

It's a culmination of months of work collecting both cash and toy donations totaling around $40,000.

These elves aren't riding reindeer, but driving a caravan of vehicles on 26 routes around town.

That's where 357 families anxiously wait for their special delivery.

Families receiving these donations have anywhere from one to eight children, so all those donations go a long way.

It's a special night for all involved.

"Oh, it's my favorite night of the year," said Jaycees member Amber Walker. "I mean they just light up. They're so friendly. They'll make you cookies or draw you pictures because they're expecting you to come. It's just really special."

For months, people have been dropping off donations at locations all around Cape Girardeau.

It's a team effort organized by several within the organization, but the delivery takes dozens of volunteers to execute.

And they're happy to volunteer their time.

"Cause that's what Christmas is all about you know," Walker said. "It's not about yourself. It's about being a part of something bigger."
