School uniforms proposed in Carterville, IL

CARTERVILLE, IL (KFVS) -

In the Carterville School District, school board member Adam Compton brought the idea up of having uniforms, or school-approved clothing, a few months ago.

Compton said his thought was that it could minimize the costs for parents and the social pressures for students.

People in the Heartland gave mixed reaction.

“I can see from a security issue where a dress code would be important or a uniform but I still think that kids need a form of self-expression so it doesn’t bother me that they don’t have a dress code,” Randy Talley said.

“I think it would cut down on kids getting sent home from school because they have the wrong the wrong kind of shirt on or their skirt is too short. So yeah, I think it’s a good idea,” Deborah Skeat said.

Compton said this was just an idea that he brought up in the summer.

There hasn’t been any action taken since then.

The superintendent mentioned if this idea were to be discussed further, it would be done with heavy community involvement.
