Illinois ranks No. 1 in volunteers

ILLINOIS (KFVS) -

More than 2.5 million Illinoisans volunteered in 2014 and helped make Illinois the top volunteering state out of the most populated states in the country.

"Illinois volunteers save lives every day," according to Scott McFarland, Executive Director of the Serve Illinois Commission.  "They give comfort to the homeless, help educate our students, respond to disasters, and so much more."

Volunteers served nearly 275 million hours last year, which can be valued at $6.8 billion.

Additionally, volunteers are almost twice as likely to donate money to charity as non-volunteers.
