Secret Santa donates $1,000 to families in Du Quoin community

Another Secret Santa is at work in the Heartland, this time, in Du Quoin. A man anonymously donated $1,000 to help 10 families in need in the community.

Each family gets a $100 bill to help them out this Christmas.

Eudora Edward was the first to receive the gift of a Christmas card stuffed with cash.

“It says ‘Merry Christmas’ and it has a $100 bill in it. ‘May your Christmas be filled with wonderful things,’” Edwards said as she read the card.

This mother of six couldn’t be more grateful. While the man remains unknown, his character is very evident.

“Somebody is out there and looking out and trying to care for people that might need a little extra help,” Police Chief Jamie Ellermeyer said.

Ellermeyer says officers will hand out the other nine gifts as they see fit.

“They know the people in the community and when they see somebody walking down the street or coming out of a store uptown of going in and they see somebody they know that would be in need, you know, I don’t think it will take long for them to give the other money out,” Ellermeyer said.

Edward says she thanks God for the generosity of a stranger who helped make her family’s Christmas little brighter.

“I always have faith so I just considered it as a blessing,” Ellermeyer said.

She just has a few things to say to that mystery man.

“Thank you very much and Merry Christmas to you,” Ellermeyer said.

Chief Ellermeyer says he knows the Secret Santa well and tells us this is not the first time he’s stepped up to lend a helping hand to those in need in the community.

Chief Ellermeyer says here are many organizations in town through which you can give if you want to help others such as: The Youth Center, The Fire Department and Jaycee's toy program, and The Eagles Club.
