WEST FRANKFORT, IL (KFVS) -

A southern Illinois Christmas display has returned for the 2015 season.

Candy Cane Lane in West Frankfort, Ill. is a Christmas display of mostly original artwork and lights spanning five blocks. It's been put on for more than 30 years.

Students from Frankfort Community High School help create the pieces of art that include plywood character figures from Disney, Marvel, DC, popular culture icons like the Beatles and Taylor Swift.

The display is organized by retired art teacher of 45 years Tim Murphy.

He said he's put thousands of dollars into the display over the years. Volunteers also collect donations to help pay for costs. Murphy said the electric bill alone costs more than $2,000 for December.

“We’re real proud of it," Murphy said. “Candy Cane Lane is my gift…is my gift back to people.”

Set up for the display begins mid-October and the lights turned on the last Friday of November.

“I think it’s the spirit. It’s the only thing I can say, I just love Christmas.”

Visitors can see it for themselves from until 10 p.m. on weekdays and until 11 p.m. on the weekends until December 31.
