Two towns in the Heartland have landed on a top 12 list of the best main streets in Missouri.

Jackson and Ste. Genevieve were ranked as two of the best in the state by onlyinyourstate.

The website looked at shops, eateries, and historical markers in various downtown districts.

Store owners and shoppers agree something good is happening in uptown Jackson.

"Business has definitely picked up,
Cobblestone Corner co-owner Janey Foust said. There's a lot more activity in Uptown."

"So we're becoming, I think, more of a destination," High Street Station owner Lisa Walker said.

Walker says the notoriety is in part thanks efforts from volunteers.

"We formed an Uptown Jackson Revitalization Organization and I think that's kind of when it all started," Walker said.

For Uptown Jackson president Bob Schooley and his team of volunteers, reinvigorating downtown is an ongoing project.

"You can really start to feel that pulse just rise and the entire area gets on board," Schooley said. "The merchants really get excited which excites us. It's nice to see the efforts that everyone puts in rewarded."

Schooley says they were able to look at what worked in other towns and apply it there.

Ste. Genevieve is another town that made the list.

Ste. Genevieve Downtown Renewal Project president Kara Burts says for town revitalization to succeed, all parties involved need to work as a team.

"It's a unique shopping experience,
Burts said. "We're kind of like a liaison between the merchants and the city and we're all working together."

Organizers say it's that cohesiveness that will keep town's moving in the right direction.

If we keep doing what we've been doing, keep our efforts just as strong, keep our volunteers growing, it can go nothing but move forward," Schooley said.
