Heartland ties to the NFL

Through the years there's been several people with ties to the Heartland make it to the NFL and the Super Bowl.

We've put together a list of some of those players.

Missouri

1962-66 - Edward Blaine was a guard for the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers. He is from Farmington, Mo. and attended the University of Missouri-Columbia.

1969 - Gary Crane was linebacker for the Denver Broncos. He is from Dexter, Mo. and attended Arkansas State University.

1972-79 - Charlie Babb was a defensive back/safety for the Miami Dolphins (Super Bowl winner). He is from Charleston, Mo. and attended Memphis.

1972-1986 - Derland Moore was a defensive lineman for the New Orleans Saints and New York Jets. He is from Poplar Bluff, Mo. and attended the University of Oklahoma.

1973-77 - Eddie Moss was a running back for the St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Redskins. He is from Poplar Bluff, Mo. and attended Southeast Missouri State University.

1981-1990 - James Wilder was a running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Detroit Lions and Washington Redskins. He is from Sikeston, Mo. and attended the University of Missouri-Columbia.

1989 - Rick Aeilts was drafted as a tight end for the Cleveland Browns. He attended Southeast Missouri State University.

1995-present - Marty Mornhinweg has served in different coaching capacities for the San Francisco 49ers, Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens. He is a former assistant coach at Southeast Missouri State University.

1997-2005 - Kyle Richardson was a punter for the Baltimore Ravens, Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns. He is from Farmington, Mo. and attended Arkansas State University.

1998-2008 - Jon Gruden coached for the Oakland Raiders and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He coached at Southeast Missouri State University in 1988.

2004 - Brandon Barnes was a linebacker for the Washington Redskins. He is from Sikeston, Mo. and attended the University of Missouri-Columbia.

2004-2011 - Eugene Amano was a guard for the Tennessee Titans. He attended Southeast Missouri State University.

2005-2014 - Dan Connolly was a guard for the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New England Patriots. He attended Southeast Missouri State University.

2007-2013 - Edgar Jones has played numerous positions for the Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys. He attended Southeast Missouri State University.

2009-present - William Moore is a safety for the Atlanta Falcons. He is from Hayti, Mo. and attended the University of Missouri-Columbia.

2014-present - Kony Ealy is a defensive lineman for the Carolina Panthers. He is from New Madrid, Mo. and attended the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Illinois

Salukis who played in the NFL include:

1922-25 - Russ Smith was a guard for the Chicago Bears (1922), Milwaukee Badgers (1923-24), Cleveland (1924), Detroit Lions (1925) and the Chicago Bears (1925). He attended SIU from 1914-15.

1932 - Abe Martin was a running back for the Chicago Cardinals. He attended SIU in 1930.

1959-68 - Marion Rushing was a linebacker for the Chicago Bears (1959), St. Louis Cardinals (1962-65), Atlanta Falcons (1966-68) and the Houston Oilers (1968) AFL. He attended SIU from 1954-57.

1961-72 - Houston Antwine was a defensive tackle for the Boston Patriots (1961-70), New England Patriots (1971) and the Philadelphia Eagles (1972). He attended SIU from 1957-60.

1962-66 - Amos Bullocks was a running back for the Dallas Cowboys (1962-64) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (1966). He attended SIU from 1958-61.

1962-64 - Carver Shannon was a running back for the Los Angeles Rams. He attended SIU from 1955-58.

1963 - Clarence Walker was a running back for the Denver Broncos. He attended SIU from 1959-60.

1963-70 - Sam Silas was a defensive tackle for the St. Louis Cardinals (1963-67), New York Giants (1968) and the San Francisco 49ers (1969-70). He attended SIU from 1959-62.

1964-70 - Ernie Wheelwright was a running back for the New York Giants (1964-65), Atlanta Falcons (1966-67) and the New Orleans Saints (1967-70). He attended SIU in 1960.

1965 - Jim Thompson was a defensive tackle for the Denver Broncos. He attended SIU from 1960-62.

1966 - Jim Battle was an offensive tackle for the Minnesota Vikings. He attended SIU from 1959-62.

1966-1984 - Jim Hart was a quarterback for the St. Louis Cardinals (1966-83) and the Washington Redskins (1984). He attended SIU from 1963-65.

1969-73 - Al Jenkins was an offensive tackle for the Cleveland Browns (1969-70), Miami Dolphins (1972) and the Houston Oilers (1973). He attended SIU in 1965.

1969-81 - Carl Mauck was a center for the Baltimore Colts (1969), Miami Dolphins (1970), San Diego Chargers (1971-74) and the Houston Oilers (1975-81). He attended SIU from 1966-68.

1972-79 - Lionel Antoine was an offensive tackle for the Chicago Bears. He attended SIU from 1969-71.

1973 - Mike Kaczmarek was a linebacker for the Baltimore Colts. He attended SIU from 1970-72.

1974 - Tommy Thompson was a running back for the San Diego Chargers. He attended SIU from 1971-72.

1975 - Bill Story was an offensive tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs. He attended SIU from 1970-72.

1980-87 - Kevin House was a wide receiver for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1980-86) and the Los Angeles Rams (1986-87). He attended SIU from 1976-79.

1983 - John Harper was a linebacker for the Atlanta Falcons. He attended SIU from 1979-82.

1984-95 - Terry Taylor was a defensive back for the Seattle Seahawks (1985-88), Detroit Lions (1989-91), Cleveland Browns (1992-93), Seattle Seahawks (1994) and the Atlanta Falcons (1995). He attended SIU from 1980-83.

1986-89 - Tom Baugh was a center for the Kansas City Chiefs (1986-88) and the Cleveland  Browns (1989). He attended SIU from 1982-85.

1987 - Fabray Collins was a linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings. He attended SIU from 1981-83.

1987 - Sebron Spivey was a wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys. He attended SIU in 1983 and from 1985-86.

1987 - Ralph Van Dyke was an offensive tackle for the Cleveland Browns. He attended SIU from 1983-86.

1987-93 - Adrian White was a defensive back for the New York Giants (1987-91), the Green Bay Packers (1992) and the New England Patriots (1993). He attended SIU in 1982.

1988 - Dave Smith was an offensive tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals. He attended SIU from 1984-87.

1994-95 - Yonel Jourdain was a running back for the Buffalo Bills. He attended SIU from 1989-92.

1997-2001 - Damon Jones was a tight end for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He attended SIU from 1994-96.

2002-12 - Bart Scott was a linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens (2002-08) and the New York Jets (2009-12). He attended SIU from 1998-2001.

2005-13 - Brandon Jacobs was a running back for the New York Giants (2005-11), the San Francisco 49ers (2012) and the New York Giants (2013). He attended SIU in 2004.

2010-12 - Deji Karim was a running back for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2010-11) and Indianapolis Colts (2012). He attended SIU from 2007-09.

2013-present - Jayson DiManche is a linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals. He attended SIU from 2009-12.

Kentucky

Some players from Murray State University who played in the NFL include:

Bryan Hall is a former Paducah Tilghman standout who went on to play for Arkansas State before signing as a free agent with the Baltimore Ravens in 2011.

Tim Masthay went from Murray High School, to playing for Kentucky and then made his mark in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers. They won the Super Bowl in 2010.

Tennessee

The University of Tennessee-Martin's current representatives playing in the NFL include:

  • 1962 - Bobby Fowler was a running back for the New York Jets.
  • 1968-69 - Gordon Lambert was a defensive lineman for the Denver Broncos.
  • 1969-71 - Julian Nunamaker was a defensive lineman for the Buffalo Bills.
  • 1972 - Mike Crangle was a defensive lineman for the New Orleans Saints.
  • 1972-73 - Joe Taffoni was an offensive lineman for the New York Giants.
  • 1989 - John Burch was a running back for the Phoenix Cardinals.
  • 1989-90 - Emanuel McNeil was a defensive lineman for the New England Patriots (1989) and the New York Jets (1990).
