Kennett to have its first ever soup kitchen event

KENNETT, MO (KFVS) -

A mom and her son are taking matters into their own hands when it comes to meeting a need in their community this holiday season. Kennett will have its first ever soup kitchen.

It’s happening on Saturday, December 19 at the community center in Kennett from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The idea came about when Janel Harmon and her 11-year-old son Troy Foley were looking for a place to volunteer, especially during the holidays. They found out the closest soup kitchen to them is in Cape Girardeau.

So, they decided to put one together themselves in their own community. They say many people in the area can't afford food so if they could help, they would. Janel and Troy say it's all about doing what you can to help others.

“I feel like a ton of people are going to be in need of this. Even if it’s for the company and not the soup, you know, they just don’t want to be alone,” Harmon said.

“I want to give people food that don’t have food or can’t get it that often, like people in shelters and stuff like that and then homeless people on the streets,” Foley said.

Many people have volunteered to bring soup and to help serve.

This will be the first year for the event but Janel and Troy hope it grows into much more. Janel and Troy say all are welcome to attend.

The Community Center is located at 900 Kennett Street.

Those wishing to volunteer time or make donations should call 573-344-3713.
