'Suspicious package' found in KY neighborhood was Christmas package

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) -

The 500 block of North Sixth Street in Paducah is back open after police inspected a suspicious package on Monday, Dec. 14.

The Paducah Police Department reported earlier in the day that people were asked to leave their homes and traffic was detoured after a woman found a suspicious package near her car.

The woman called police at 11:51 a.m. and said there was a Christmas package by her car and that she thought it was suspicious.

The Paducah Police Department’s Bomb Squad was called to the scene and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive was closed to traffic.

Det. Sgt. Anthony Copeland said he became increasingly concerned when he saw wires coming from the box.

Because of the possible threat, officers decided to evacuate the immediate area.

They went door-to-door, asking residents to leave their homes, according to Assistant Chief Brian Krueger.

Some time later, a woman who previously had not answered her door came out onto her porch. Officers advised her she needed to leave her home because of the package.

The woman identified the package as one belonging with her Christmas display. She said it apparently had blown away.

Police re-opened Martin Luther King Drive and cleared the scene just before 2 p.m.
