Man arrested after fight over video games turns into shooting in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Police arrested a man accused of shooting someone after getting into a fight while playing video games.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department reports that Tahjay Matthews is in custody after the Dec. 11 shooting.

Police say after actively searching for him, he turned himself in just before midnight on Monday.

According to court documents, on Friday, Dec. 11, officers responded to Elm and Pacific Streets after receiving a call at 9:28 p.m. of multiple shots fired.

When officers arrived on the scene, they located the victim. The victim had a gunshot wound to his lower back and abdomen.

They say he was in stable condition and went to an area hospital.

He then told police that Matthews had shot him while playing video games. He said that the two had been placing bets and got into a fight which which ended up outside.

The victim alleges that Matthews pulled out a gun. He said he began to run away and all he could hear was gunshots and a female screaming, "Stop Tahjay!"

He said he continued to run until he noticed he had been shot, in which he then fell on his back.

The victim identified Matthews from a photo lineup.

Matthews has been charged with assault in the 1st degree, a Class A felony and also armed criminal action, also a felony.

Matthews is being held on $100,000 cash only bond. He cannot have direct or indirect contact with the victim or come within 500 feet of his home or place of employment.
