Portageville PD reporting Craigslist scam

PORTAGEVILLE, MO (KFVS) -

The Portageville Police Department has received information about a scam allegedly taking place on Craigslist.

Police say the "scammers" are buying items for sale and paying for them with counterfeit checks and/or money orders.

The checks or money orders are being sent in amounts that exceed the asking price. The victims then deposit the checks or money orders and send the remaining balance to an address.

For example, an item is for sale for $600 and you receive a check for $2,500.

Police say the "scammers" want you to send them the remaining $1,900.

After investigating the complaints, police say they discovered the addresses are forward to another country.

They recommend you contact law enforcement if you encounter any of these situations.
