Students, outdoor professionals, and enthusiasts will want to check out a pair of intensive, wilderness medical training workshops at Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Touch of Nature Environmental Center early next year.

The Wilderness First Responder Certification Course is set for January 6-14 at the center.

The Wilderness First Responder Course Re-certification will take place January 15-17.

The courses provide participants with valuable information and training that enables them to handle medical emergencies that happen in a setting where calling 911 and getting help isn't possible.

The course is open to the general public. SIU students are also able to earn three credit hours.

Those who successfully complete the course receive a three-year certification from Wilderness Medical Associates, the training company providing professional instructors for the class.

The cost of the course is $895 and includes room and board.  Commuters pay $695.  Those who have been previously certified and are completing the re-certification course, will pay $395, including room and board.  Commuters will owe $315.

The deadline to register for both courses is December 22nd.  SIU students planning to take the course for credit should contact Clayton Sheehan at 618-453-112 or by email at csheehan@siu.edu to register.  If you're part of the general public and need more information, or want to sign up, call Erik Oberg at 618-453-1122 or email him at eriko@siu.edu.
