SIUC to host winter sports clinics for kids

Even though we're nearing the colder months of winter, the spring baseball and track seasons will be here before you know it.

With that in mind, Southern Illinois University Carbondale is hosting two winter athletics clinics for kids.

The Jump, Throw or Vault Clinic is planned for Jan. 2, 2016, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center. It's open to any junior high or high school students who would like to learn or improve their skills in long jump, high jump, triple jump, shot put, discus or pole vaults events.  Associate Saluki head coach Terry VanLaningham, along with assistant coach J.C. Lambert, will be the instructors. The cost is $100 for jumps, $100 for throws, or $100 for pole vault.  Coaches are welcome and lunch will be provided.

The Baseball Winter Hitting Clinic will be Jan. 22-24 at the Garden Grove Event Center (formerly Sports Blast), at 115 E. Walnut Street in Carbondale.  The daily 1:00-3:30 pm is for kids ages 6-12.  Athletes ages 13-18 will attend from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. those three days.  The baseball clinic will cover all aspects of the Saluki hitting approach, using the same drills the SIU players use daily.  The registration fee is $125.  Each session is limited to the first 25 people to register.

You can sign up online or call 618-536-7751 and pay by credit card.

In order to participate, all kids must have a completed Athletic Camp Medical Release Form on file with the office a few days prior to the clinic they will be attending.

Find the form online.  For more information about the clinics, call Jackie Welch at 618-453-5672.
