Franklin Co., IL first responders get cash for new equipment

BENTON, IL (KFVS) -

Franklin County first responders received more than $5,000 for new equipment through a private grant.

The grant was provided by the Marathon Oil Company, which donates to departments across the Heartland every year.

Benton Firefighter Jeff Coleman said their cut of the cash will go to replace outdated gas-detection systems used for fire containment.

“It’s just like a computer,” Coleman explained. “Whatever you had ten years ago, newer and better things have come out since then.”

In recent years, similar grants have allowed the department to purchase things like a Hazardous material supply unit.

“City budgets are really tight, so getting new equipment is hard to come by,” Coleman added. “Especially when it comes to anything that isn’t an absolute necessity.”

The sheriff’s department received most of the grant this year, which Sheriff Don Jones said will be used on new radio systems.
