WEST FRANKFORT, IL (KFVS) -

A southern Illinois high school student is recovering in a St. Louis hospital after injuries sustained in an after school fight.

Two juvenile students were involved in an altercation in the Frankfort Community High School parking lot immediately after school on December 2, according to West Frankfort Police Chief Shawn Talluto.

According to police, the fight ended when the boy hit his head on concrete. He was taken to local doctors and later flown to a St. Louis hospital with, Talluto said.

The boy's condition is unknown at this time.

The West Frankfort Police Department is working with the Franklin County State’s Attorney’s Office on the cases; however, no charges have been filed at this time.

Talluto said it’s important for individuals at any age to understand that some actions have consequences.

“Individuals at the high school level need to be aware that they can be held accountable, whether they mean to do something or not,” Talluto said.

He said he expects charges to be filed after the investigation is complete.
