CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Bars and restaurants in downtown Cape Girardeau are getting ready to give back for the 14th annual Happy Slapowitz Toy Bash.

The goal is to collect toys and money for the Marine Corps League's Toys for Tots program.

There are a total of 11 venues in Cape Girardeau's historic downtown district that are involved.

“We have over 60 sponsors to help us put this on," said organizer Ryan Eftink. "We have every bar in downtown Cape on board."

A new, unwrapped toy, $10 donation or a 2015 Happy Slapowitz t-shirt gets you into all of the venues. T-shirts are no longer on sale on-line, but should be available at some locations tonight.

The evening starts off at 6:00 p.m. with a BBQ buffet dinner by Smokin' Brothers and at several downtown locations. Then the bands take over at 8:00 p.m. playing until late into the night.

The events started in 2001, and last year it raised a record amount of toys and cash to help hundreds of kids in southeast Missouri.

"We collected about 3,500 toys for local kids," Eftink said.

Organizers hope the warm, dry weather will help bring out bigger crowds to help the event gather even more toys to help area kids this year.
