CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The Carbondale City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to create a special liquor license to allow alcohol inside a movie theater.

The “Class K” liquor was approved after a presentation by AMC executives that want to remodel the AMC Showplace 8 in Carbondale and turn it into a modern luxury movie theater complete with a bar that serves alcohol.

AMC  executives will still need to apply for the liquor license and it be approved by council before the theater is allowed to serve alcohol.

Executives stress years of declining movie theater revenue and a new need to find ways to bring customers back to the theater.

The theater would allow adults 21 and older to purchase alcohol before or during movies at a small bar called MacGuffin’s in the theater lobby.

The new theater would downsize its seating from 1,863 to 708, but theaters would include luxury recliner seats in an effort to boost attendance.

AMC serves alcohol at 115 locations nationwide and in 11 locations in Illinois. The movie theater franchise is currently building 17 theaters that serve alcohol.

AMC in Carbondale plans to begin the remodel in the spring of 2016.
