(KFVS) -

As the winter season approaches, Illinois American Water is advising residents in the Heartland to take preventive measures in order to ensure their homes are ready to endure the upcoming cold temperatures.

Illinois American Water President Bruce Hauk warns residents that temperatures below 32 degrees can severely damage pipes and plumbing, leaving homeowners to deal with the cost of repair.

According to Hauk, "By taking the proper preventive steps, customers can avoid worrying about frozen pipes and making extensive repairs to damaged plumbing inside and outside of the home."

Illinois American Water has released tips on how to make your home winter-ready, such as:

  • Wrapping exposed pipes with insulating material before cold weather approaches.
  • Exposing pipes to warmer room temperatures during sub-freezing conditions.
  • Allowing a small amount of water to run overnight from both cold and hot faucets to help prevent freezing.

And, should pipes become frozen, Illinois American water has released tips such as :

  • Turning water off immediately.
  • Applying heat to the pipe to thaw ice, using items such as a hair dryer or hot water.
  • Once the pipes are thawed, check for cracks or leaks as a small trickle of water is flowing.

Illinois American water also recommends that residents be aware of the locations of their pipes both inside and outside their homes, and that water service providers and other such utility companies are able to be contacted in case of an emergency.
