JONESBORO, IL (KFVS) -

Crews from several Heartland fire departments are on the scene of a fire in a building on Jonesboro's town square.

The call went out around 2:30 a.m. to the building on the traffic circle connecting Broad St. (IL Rt. 146) and Main St. (IL Rt. 127).

The building houses three units for businesses.

According to Jonesboro Fire Chief Tim Bowen, the fire started in the middle unit, which was vacant.

Bowen said that the unit is a complete loss because the fire caused the roof to collapse, and flames gutted the inside of the structure.

Witnesses said at one point, the entire area was filled with so much smoke you couldn't see across the square.

The businesses on either side of the destroyed unit suffered smoke damage.

Firefighters don't know what caused the fire, but Bowen said he does not believe it to be arson.

Chief Bowen said Jonesboro, Anna, Wolf Lake and Alto Pass firefighters helped put out the flames.
