Benton leaders to vacate aging city hall

BENTON, IL (KFVS) -

Leaders in Benton are planning a move as an aging building threatens important public records.

The current City Hall building in Benton is located on West Main Street, and is 62 years old.

Mayor Fred Kondritz says city workers keep tax documents and financial records under tarps whenever it rains.

“Vintage, 1953.” Kondritz explained, “and not a whole lot’s been done to it. The roofs leak, the electric is outdated, and it’s not handicap accessible.“

The building was originally an  office built by the Old Ben Coal Company.

It was occupied by the City in 1977.

City leaders are working on a plan that would move offices into the current Benton Grade School administrative building located several blocks away.

Grade school offices would move onto Benton Grade School Grounds.

Several retailers have expressed interest in the city hall’s current property.
