2 teens killed after being hit by car in Carbondale, IL

Two teenagers were killed on Saturday night in Carbondale, Illinois after they were hit by a car.

The City of Carbondale Police Department responded to the area of East Main Street and the intersection with Reeds Station Road after a reported car crash on Saturday at 8:25 p.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they determined that a car traveling west on East Main Street had hit 18-year-old Gavin Flynn and 18-year-old Ryan Reed as they entered the roadway from the north, approximately 50 yards west of the intersection.

The pair were taken to a Carbondale hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

Flynn died from his injuries at the Carbondale hospital on Dec. 6.

Reed was flown to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri for treatment where he died early on Sunday morning, Dec. 7.

Flynn was a recent graduate of Carbondale Community High School, and Reed was a current student.

Carbondale School Superintendent Steve Murphy said teachers were notified of the deaths the day after the crash.

On Monday morning, staff met with student-led peer support groups to address concerns for the student body.

“We’re here for them," Murphy explained. “If they need to step aside and talk to someone about what they’re going through,we have grief counselors available, and our staff members will do their best to address any student concerns.”

The driver of the vehicle, a 48-year-old man, was not injured in the crash.

No citations have been issued at this time, but police say they are still investigating.

The City of Carbondale Police Department was assisted in the investigation by the Southern Illinois University Department of Public Safety, the Williamson County Sheriff’s Department, the Jackson County Ambulance Service and the Jackson County Coroner’s Office.
