Wayne Co., IL homicide victim died from single gunshot wound

WAYNE COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

A man is behind bars in connection to a homicide investigation in Wayne County, Ill.

According to WFIW Radio, 53-year-old William Johnson was arrested in Williamson County, Ill. after a man was killed at a home Saturday evening.

According to Wayne County Coroner Jimmy Taylor, a man was shot in the chest by a small caliber gun at a small mobile home on Warren Drive in Fairfield, Ill.

Taylor says the victim was pronounced dead at the scene around 7:30 p.m.

According to Williamson County Sheriff Bennie Vick, deputies spotted a person driving a car that matched the description of one related to the crime, and pulled them over. 

The driver was traveling south and was stopped after crossing in Johnson County. 

At that time, Johnson was taken into custody and us being held in the Williamson County Jail at this time.

The victim's name has not been released pending family notification. 

Deputies say the Illinois State Police are handling the investigation.
