One southbound lane of Interstate 55 was shut down at the 59 mile marker after a Fed Ex truck and passenger car crashed.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the lane should be reopened by 2:30 p.m.

The driver of the car was driving southbound in the left lane and a Fed Ex semi pulling a double trailer was driving in the right lane when they crashed around 6:45 a.m. Friday.

The driver swerved left, hit a guardrail, over corrected, and caused the tractor trailer to run off the right side of the road and overturn into a ravine, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Two people in the car had minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was able to walk away from the crash. The driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Firefighters with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety were on scene trying to contain diesel from a ruptured tank of the semi from flowing into the water in the ravine.

Sgt. Parrott said one southbound lane was blocked for several hours as crews cleaned up the mess.
