Paducah hospital offers tips to stay safe at home

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) -

Falls are a common cause of home injuries, sending more than one million Americans a year to an emergency room for treatment.

Baptist Health Paducah Home Care offers these reminders to keep you safe at home: create clear, uncluttered pathways; remove throw rugs or install non-skid rugs; move electrical cords out of walkways; make sure handrails on stairs are sturdy; rearrange items in your kitchen so you can reach them easily; place a light near your bed where it's easy to reach; install lights on stairs and night lights in hallways; put a non-slick mat or stick on strips on the floor of the tub or shower and; use grab bars in the tub or shower.

"Falls are the number one reason for injuries and a fall for an elderly person can be a life-changing event," said Melanie Hamilton, RN, and director of Baptist Health Paducah Home Care.
