Poshard Foundation announces grants to help during IL budget crisis

CARTERVILLE, IL (KFVS) -

Illinois' budget crisis leaves many services in southern Illinois struggling to make ends meet.

The Poshard Foundation for Abused children is trying to help some agencies in southern Illinois stay afloat.

On Wednesday, the foundation handed out $100,000 in total to 12 social service agencies that help children who are abandoned, neglected and abused, hoping to help provide direct counseling for these children.

Those agencies include: The Amy Center, Mt. Vernon; Baptist Children’s Home and Family Services, Carmi; Cairo Women’s Shelter, Inc., Cairo; Caritas Family Solutions, Carterville; Family Counseling Center, Inc., Golconda; Hoyleton Ministries, Hoyleton; Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, Marion; The Night’s Shield Children’s Shelter, West Frankfort; Two Rivers Child Advocacy Center, Anna; United Methodist Children’s Home, Mt. Vernon; the Women’s Center, Inc., Carbondale; Williamson County Child Advocacy Center, Herrin.

People who received money on Wednesday say it helps their services continue to move forward, despite some setbacks the state budget puts them in.

“In an area that’s hard to do a lot of fundraising, every extra amount of money that can that can come through to help  ensure whatever services we can hold onto in Alexander and Pulaski counties, this is just a big tremendous help to us,” Executive Director for the Cairo Women’s Shelter Jeannine Woods said.

“To know that there's an organization in our community that is stepping up to the plate in our legislative leaders' absence, to fulfill a gap, and for that organization to not only know how important our services are, that means so much to us as an organization,” Executive Director for the Family Counseling Center, Inc. Sherrie Crabb said.

Jo Poshard, the director of the foundation said the funding was made possible through donations from individuals and businesses.

The foundation does not receive state or federal grants.
