Apartment fire causes extensive damage to building in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A fire at an apartment building on Lorimier Street caused extensive damage early Tuesday morning.

According to the Cape Girardeau fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to the building around 5:30 a.m. in response to a call about smoke in a basement apartment.

When crews got there, firefighters could not see any smoke from the exterior of the building.

Inside of the apartment, firefighters found a small fire in the kitchen. The fire spread through the walls to the first and second floors.

Firefighters had the fire contained by 7:30 a.m.

The fire department says seven of the 10 apartments were occupied. All of the apartments were evacuated, however, no one was injured.

Lorimier Street is back open after being shutdown so fire crews could respond to the fire.

No word yet on what caused the fire, however, the Cape Girardeau Fire Department says it does not appear suspicious.
