Police: Man arrested after punching Cape Girardeau PD officer in face

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A man faces charges after police say he punched a Cape Girardeau police officer in the face on Sunday and ran away. 

Derekus Michael Parker, 23, of Cape Girardeau is charged with assault on an officer second degree and resisting arrest.

Cape Girardeau police officers caught up with Parker and arrested him behind the Broadway Prescription Shop.

Officials say an officer checked on a pedestrian at the intersection of Frederick Street and Broadway around 11 a.m. Sunday

According to police, the suspect punched a police officer in the eye.

The suspect then ran a couple blocks west and circled back around to the back of the Dollar General and Broadway Prescription Shop buildings. 

Police say it's unknown why the man hit the officer.

Parker was taken to the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department.

His bond was set at $15,000.
