Mississippi River expected to cause minor flooding

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Minor flooding is expected for some Missouri and Illinois counties along the Mississippi River starting Tuesday.

Due to rain over the past few days in the Midwest, some Heartland counties will see a rise in river levels along the banks of the Mississippi River.

In Cape Girardeau, minor flooding should start on Tuesday and crest at 33 feet midday on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Paducah. 

Minor flood stage is 32 feet for Cape Girardeau. As of 9 p.m. on Sunday, the flood stage reached 27.5 feet and rising.

In Chester, the river is expected to rise about seven feet from where it is Sunday morning.  The river should crest at 29.1 feet late Tuesday nigh tor Wednesday morning.  The minor flood stage there is 27 feet.

The flood warning is expected to last until Thursday. By then, river levels in Cape Girardeau and Chester should be back below minor flood stage.

The counties impacted by the warning include:

  • Alexander County, IL
  • Jackson County, IL
  • Union County, IL
  • Cape Girardeau County, MO
  • Perry County, MO
  • Scott County, MO
