A long time Thanksgiving tradition is still going strong in Carbondale -- The Newman Catholic Center is celebrating 48 years of providing a thanksgiving dinner to the community .

On Thursday, more than 600 people were served a free meal inside the center in Carbondale from noon to 2 p.m.

Organizer JP Dunn said it's an overwhelming experience to provide this dinner to the community.

“When I started [doing] this 25-years-ago it really opened my eyes to the folks who don’t have a place to go," Dunn said." Whether it’s they can’t afford it or whether they don’t have family in the area. And it’s nice to see them come in and make them smile, give them a nice good nutritious meal, and… It builds every year and it’s just gives you such a warm feeling.”

Volunteers are still needed to help clean up. If you’d like to help, you can show up beginning at 7 a.m. Friday morning at the Newman Center…
