Salvation Army in Cape preparing Thanksgiving dinner

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The Salvation Army in Cape Girardeau is preparing a Thanksgiving dinner for more than two thousand people.

Volunteers are working in shifts, preparing 40 turkeys, dozens of green bean casseroles and hundreds of individual desserts.

Some volunteers will be working into the early morning hours.

Captain Ronnie Amick of the Salvation Army said that getting such a big meal ready wouldn't be possible without all the help from all of the volunteers.

"Well the volunteer help has been tremendous," Amick said. "Every year that my wife and I have lived here we've always had a lot of volunteers and were very appreciative of the community doing that. That meal is needed for a lot of families who can't afford a full Thanksgiving dinner or maybe it's just a couple who doesn't want to make their own meal, all that food for one meal and then come down here and fellowship with people in the community."

Take out lunches will be available starting at 10:30 a.m. and the plate line will start at 11.

Coats that were collected during a coat drive earlier this year will also be given out at the dinner.
