Black Friday Safety Tip: Walking to, from your car

A ton of shopping bags and expensive electronics can put a spotlight on you for potential thieves.

Cape Girardeau police offer these tips:

  • Be observant of your surroundings. Use the free mobile app available for AlertID to receive alerts about registered sex offenders living and working in the vicinity of your shopping venue.
  • Deter pickpockets. Carry your purse close to your body or your wallet inside a coat or front pant pocket.
  • Have your keys in-hand when approaching your vehicle. Check the back seat and around the car before getting in.
  • Bags full of video games or electronics make an enticing target. Do not leave packages visible in your car. Clean out that trunk and make as much space as possible before you head out shopping and lock your purchases in the trunk; or, if possible, take them directly home.

Sergeant Adam Glueck, with the Cape Girardeau Police Department, said they are adding more security to make people in the area feel safer.

“We’ve directed a lot of our officers just on an overtime basis to focus on those area of town, where we are expecting large crowds," Glueck said. "In particular different stores that have a lot of sales going on and places we expect crowds to be."

Even though officers are out, he encourages people to still use precautions.

"Just because we have officers working doesn’t mean there will be one at every single store you decide to shop at," he said. "So there are different precautions you can take to make yourself safer.”

Nichole Cartmell will have additional tips on the Breakfast Show on Wednesday.
