TN man accused of driving stolen van, leading authorities on chase

WEAKLEY COUNTY, TN (KFVS) -

A man is facing charges after deputies say he stole a van and led them on a chase on Monday, Nov. 23.

Deputy James Sanders of the Weakley County Sheriff's Department said he saw a white van driving with no headlights or taillights on Main Street in Martin, Tennessee at around 8 p.m. on Monday.

He said the van had a Kentucky license tag of 877 TCR, and had been reported stolen from Bad Bob's in Union City,Tenn. on Saturday, Nov. 21.

When Deputy Sanders tried to stop the van, he said the suspect took off, heading north on Hwy 45 toward South Fulton, Tenn.

He said the van made several turns, driving back and forth between Martin Street and South Fulton.

Deputies from Obion County, officers from South Fulton and troopers from the Kentucky State Police also tried to stop the van before it crashed on State Line Rd., east of Dukedom, Tennessee at 8:27 p.m.

The driver of the van was identified as Greg Birchem. He was airlifted to a Memphis hospital.

Deputy Sanders said several charges are pending against Birchem in Weakley County.
